Are the Florida Marlins popular in Miami?
Although the Florida Marlins have won the World Series twice (in 1997 and 2003), when I see them play at home on television, it does not seem that there are a lot of fans at the ballpart to support them. I was wondering if the Marlins are a popular baseball team in Miami, Florida and in what ways?
I think I can answer this question as I live in Miami and am a die hard fan of the Marlins. The problem with the franchise is ill will b/w the fans and the owners. The first owner, Wayne Huizenga (who also owns the Dolphins) released all the players from the roster of the first WS winning Marlins b/c he was pissed off his desire to have land and permit grants to build a theme park called Wayne’s World was not passed by local commissioners. When fans saw that – they were like screw this I’m not going to give him my money. He sold them, and then in a bizarre twisted incomprehensible fallout, the Marlins owner Henry, the Expos owner and the Red Sox owners did some shake and bake and Henry ended up with Boston and Loria and some investors ended up with the Marlins. The new Marlins owners lobbied heavily in Miami to have the residents pay for a state of the art Baseball stadium with a retractable roof – some 500 million dollars. But city officials balked as did residents – the truth is the money wasn’t there. They built the new series winning team and when they didn’t get the stadium the did just like huizenga and traded away most of the team for new faces. Again, we were like screw them im not giving them my money. Then last year,
Girrardi took these “freshmen” and made a run for it. Lowest salaried team in Baseball and the did some a** kicking – but b/c Girrardi gave some lip to Loria the NL Manager of the Year found himself without a job and again something to feel good about for the fans was given away. So this year again we’re like screw em. I catch them on TV and I love them. But ill will between fans and management over a decade and a half has them hurting. I can tell you a football stadium (particularly Dolphins stadium) where they play is not a very good view of the game (probably the poorest in Baseball) – the residents of Miami were willing to give the owners premiere land near downtown (where the Orange Bowl is) and subsidize most of the construction but Loria (like Huizenga before him) was “all or nothing” and so with everything we have all of us also have nothing. Screw them! That’s the attitude here. Hope that helps.
